LKN Pain Relief & Wellness Center

Chiropractic & Rehabilitation

19315 West Catawba Ave., Suite 100

Cornelius, NC 28031

The LKN Pain Relief and Wellness Center is dedicated to bringing the most recently researched, state of the art chiropractic and physiological therapeutic information, techniques and practices to the Cornelius area.

We provide evidence-based chiropractic care focused on the nervous, muscular, and skeletal systems of the body.

Our goal is to provide advanced non-surgical techniques to diagnose and treat the underlying cause of the condition. Then through a combination of therapies we address postural correction, injury rehabilitation, joint stabilization, strength and conditioning, and nutritional and lifestyle modifications.

The LKN Pain Relief & Wellness Center is an integrated rehabilitative clinic.   The integration of chiropractic, physiological therapeutic techniques, and massage therapy makes our office unique and allows us to provide patients with a comprehensive approach to conservative rehabilitative therapy.  This combination allows our practice to accommodate a wide spectrum of injuries, pain syndromes, and post operative scar tissue removal.  We are able to effectively manage musculoskeletal pain syndromes through the acute pain phase and the various stages of healing.  We then transition the patients into rehabilitative and core stability exercises before discharging them with a comprehensive home exercise program.

The integration of therapies allows our doctors to be more effective in their treatment of patients.  It also leads to a much higher patient satisfaction as our patients are able to receive the immediate benefit of chiropractic management of soft tissue injuries and mechanical joint dysfunction, followed by traditional physiological therapeutic techniques consisting of ancillary modalities and comprehensive rehabilitative exercise focused on core stability and normalizing biomechanical movement patterns.  Our primary concern is for the patient, and we are confident that our facility is best suited to care for those patients suffering from musculoskeletal injuries or mechanical joint dysfunction.

What Type of Treatments Can You Expect?

Active Release Technique (ART®)

ART® is a state of the art soft tissue system/movement based technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves.   Active Release Techniques is non-invasive, very safe, has virtually no side effects, and has a record of producing over 90% success rates with patients.  When a soft tissue problem has resolved the symptoms will not return unless the injury happens again.  To avoid future injuries we instruct our patients in specific exercises give postural recommendations and explain to our patients the mechanism of injury so that it may be avoided in the future.

Graston Technique®

The Graston Technique, originally developed by athletes, is changing the way clinicians — including athletic trainers, chiropractors, physical therapists, occupational therapists — and patients view treatment of acute and chronic soft tissue injuries.  The Graston Technique is an innovative, patented form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization that enables clinicians to effectively break down scar tissue and fascial restrictions.  The Technique utilizes specially designed stainless steel instruments to specifically detect and effectively treat areas exhibiting soft tissue fibrosis or chronic inflammation.  Graston Technique® is effective for treating effectively all soft tissue conditions, whether they are chronic or acute and post surgical.

What Types Of Injuries Do We Treat?

When it comes to soft tissue injuries the greatest percent of these injuries are Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI).  In fact, the cost of these injuries has over taken all other health care expenditures and is now the greatest drain on our health care system.  According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), repetitive strain injuries are the nations most common and costly occupational health problem, affecting hundreds of thousands of North American workers, and costing more than 100 billion a year in related costs.

Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI), caused by cumulative trauma, are now the leading cause of injuries in the workforce.  Statistics show that the number of patients suffering from cumulative trauma has now surpassed those suffering from back pain.  RSI cases have increased at a phenomenal rate of 670 % over the last five years.  Common therapies such as cross friction massage, heat, cold, electrical stimulation, rest, exercise, and surgery – have all failed to treat cumulative trauma effectively.

With a success rate of over 90%, Active Release Technique® (ART) and Graston Technique have become two of most sought after soft tissue treatments in the world today.
ART® and Graston are the most effect forms of treatment for repetitive-motion injuries, has helped Olympic athletes achieve gold medals, and allowed injured athletes to return quickly to their training protocols.

How Do Repetitive Strain Injuries Occur?

Overused muscles (and other traumatized soft tissues) can cause changes to your body in three important ways:

  • Cause acute injuries (pulls, tears, collisions, etc.).
  • Accumulate small tears
    (micro-trauma).
  • Reduce oxygen flow to cells (hypoxia).

Each of these changes causes your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. This scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up:

  • Muscles become shorter and weaker.
  • Tension on tendons causes tendonitis.
  • Nerves can become trapped.

This can result in reduced ranges of motion, loss of strength, and pain. With trapped nerves, you may also feel tingling, numbness, shooting pains, burning sensations, weakness, muscle atrophy and circulatory changes.

What to Expect During Treatment

Every ART® and Graston session is actually a combination of examination and treatment.  The doctor uses his or her hands to evaluate the texture, tension, movement and function of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves.  Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements.

These treatment protocols – over 500 of them - are unique to ART® and Graston.  They allow providers to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual patient.

Treatments take about 8-15 minutes for each area being treated.  A condition may require two to ten visits before full functionality is restored.  Joint manipulation is frequently carried out in conjunction with ART to increase treatment effectiveness.

Whenever possible we have our patients perform active movements during the treatment process. Active motions stimulate neurological pathways in the spinal cord that help to reduce pain during treatment.  Motion also helps to reproduce the stresses the patient will actually be under during normal active motion

Strength, speed, and endurance are expected to improve within the first few treatments.  We will often have our patients test these factors after two or three visits.  If no improvement is seen, we know that either we have not found the source of the problem, or the area affected needs to be strengthened further.

How Does An ART® or Graston® Treatment Feel?

Treatments can feel uncomfortable during the movement phases as the scar tissue or adhesions "break-up".  This discomfort is temporary and subsides almost immediately after the treatment.   It is common to feel a duplication of your pain symptoms during the treatment (a good indication that the problem has been identified).   Patients often report that "It hurts good".

The Active Release and Graston Techniques offer many advantages to the patient such as:

  • Decreases overall time of treatment
  • Fosters faster rehabilitation/recovery
  • Reduces need for anti-inflammatory medication
  • Resolves chronic conditions thought to be permanent .
